He of Cloven Hoof and Leathern Wing

from Whence Cometh Evil? by Christgrinder

about

In this song we wanted to explore how religions supplant one another over time.

There are countless examples of religions adopting doctrines and deities from their competitors and over time relegating the original versions to half remembered folklore and myths, the archetypal example being the character of Satan in Christianity, who borrows his cloven hooves and horns from various Pagan deities.

This melding of ideas can be seen even in secular traditions, for example the modern conception of Santa, which melds the Christian Saint Nicholas, Swiss and Belgian gift givers like Sinterklass, the Germanic Yuletide role of Woden and the green robed English Father Christmas.

These days, the name Beelzebub is variously used as one of the Devil's many monikers, or as the name of a distinct entity, but it is thought to be a corruption of the Ugaritic deity Baal Ze Bul, whose name means 'The Lord on High'.

These ideas about linguistic drift and ancient forbidden knowledge hidden in plain sight seemed like fertile ground to sow the seeds of a folky black metal song upon.
